Piercing Guns vs Needles: A Safety Comparison

Piercing guns and professional needles work in completely different ways. Understanding that difference explains why some piercings heal smoothly, while others struggle from day one.

We often meet clients after a piercing gun has already caused a problem.

One person came in with a cartilage piercing that was swollen, painful, and constantly catching. It had been done quickly with a gun, and they were told soreness was normal. Weeks later, it was still getting worse.

Piercing guns work by forcing blunt jewellery through tissue. That blunt force causes unnecessary trauma, especially in cartilage, which has limited blood flow and heals slowly. On top of that, guns can’t be fully sterilised — they’re wiped down, not medically cleaned.

Professional needles work very differently. They’re sharp, single-use, and sterile. Instead of tearing tissue, they create a clean channel that allows jewellery to sit properly. Less trauma means less swelling and a smoother healing process.

In that client’s case, the damage had already been done, but we were able to help. We removed the original jewellery, assessed whether the piercing could be saved, and replaced it with implant-grade jewellery at a safer length. Healing improved, but it took time.

The frustration for clients is often that they weren’t told there was a difference.

We don’t use guns because we’ve seen the outcomes. Needle piercing isn’t about tradition or preference — it’s about understanding how the body heals and choosing the method that supports it.
