Why Is Your Piercing Not Healing?

A piercing that will not heal or seems stuck, is usually being held back by an ongoing problem rather than simply being slow. Find and fix that problem and healing gets moving again. This guide explains the common reasons a piercing stalls, how to get it back on track and when to seek help.

Why It Stalls

Piercing Not Healing Explained

Before deciding a piercing is not healing, it is worth checking the expected timeline, because many piercings that feel stuck are simply slow by nature. Cartilage, navels and nipples all take many months and a piercing that looks settled early is often still healing inside. A genuinely stalled piercing is one that stays sore, red, weepy or bumpy well beyond the normal window for its placement or one that seemed to be healing then went backwards.

When a piercing truly will not heal, there is almost always an ongoing problem holding it back, most often continuous irritation. The usual suspects are cheap or badly sized jewellery, harsh products or over cleaning, constant touching and knocks or a low grade metal the skin is reacting to. Because these are mostly within your control, a stalled piercing can usually be coaxed back to healing by identifying and removing whatever is disturbing it, then giving it calm, consistent care.

The Checklist

How to Get a Piercing Healing Again

Work through the common causes one by one. This checklist pairs each thing to check with the fix, so you can find what is holding your piercing back.

Check Fix
Are you over cleaning Clean only twice a day with saline
Is the metal cheap Switch to implant grade titanium
Is the bar the wrong size Have it refitted by a piercer
Are you touching it Leave it alone and wash hands first
Is it constantly knocked Protect it from pressure and snags

Getting Back on Track

Resetting a Stalled Piercing

The most effective reset is to simplify everything. Strip your routine back to twice daily sterile saline and nothing else, stop touching or turning the jewellery and protect the piercing from knocks, pressure and snags. A surprising number of stalled piercings are being over cared for rather than neglected, so doing less genuinely helps. Give this calmer routine a couple of weeks and many piercings that seemed stuck start to improve.

If simplifying does not help, look at the jewellery. Cheap metal, a bar that is too tight or too long and an ill fitting piece all keep a piercing irritated, so have a piercer assess and, if needed, refit it in implant grade titanium at the right size. General health matters too, since poor sleep, smoking and a run down state all slow healing. If a piercing still will not settle after these changes or shows signs of infection, see your piercer or a doctor for a proper assessment.

Aftercare

Caring for a Piercing That Will Not Heal

Simplify and protect. Clean only twice a day with sterile saline, stop all harsh products and stop touching or turning the jewellery. Protect the piercing from knocks, pressure and snags and if it is on the ear, keep it off your pillow. Over cleaning and over handling hold back more piercings than neglect does, so a calmer routine is often exactly what a stalled piercing needs.

Check the jewellery and your health. Have a piercer refit cheap or badly sized jewellery in implant grade titanium and support healing with good sleep, hydration and not smoking. Give the reset a couple of weeks. If the piercing still will not settle, keeps going backwards or shows signs of infection such as spreading redness, heat and discharge, see your piercer or a doctor for a proper look rather than continuing to guess.

When resetting a stalled piercing, clean it only with a gentle sterile saline spray such as NeilMed Piercing Aftercare, which supports healing without the harsh products that so often hold it back.

FAQ

Piercing Not Healing Questions

Why is my piercing not healing?

A stalled piercing usually has an ongoing cause holding it back, most often continuous irritation from cheap or badly sized jewellery, harsh products, over cleaning, touching or knocks. First check it is not simply slow by nature, then find and remove the trigger.

How do you get a piercing to heal faster when it is stuck?

Simplify your routine to twice daily saline, stop touching and turning the jewellery, protect it from knocks and refit cheap or ill fitting jewellery in titanium. Support your general health too. Many stuck piercings improve within a couple of weeks of calmer care.

How long is too long for a piercing to heal?

It depends on the placement, since cartilage and body piercings normally take many months. A piercing is a concern if it stays sore, red or weepy well beyond the normal window for its placement or if it was healing then went backwards. See a piercer if unsure.

Can over cleaning stop a piercing healing?

Yes. Over cleaning and harsh products are a common reason piercings stall, because they strip and irritate the healing skin. Twice daily sterile saline is all a piercing needs and cutting back to that often gets an over cared for piercing moving again.
